Interleaving: Why Mixing Practice Feels Worse and Works Better
Practising one thing at a time until you have it feels efficient. Mixing topics produces worse performance during practice and better retention afterwards.
Interleaving belongs to a family of findings sometimes called desirable difficulties — conditions that make learning feel harder and slower while producing better long-term retention. It is among the more counterintuitive results in learning research, and among the more replicated.
Blocked versus interleaved practice
Blocked practice means working on one type of problem or skill until it is mastered, then moving to the next: AAAA BBBB CCCC. Interleaved practice mixes them: ABCA CBAB CAB.
Studies across mathematics, sports skills, visual category learning and other domains have generally found that blocked practice produces better performance during the practice session, and interleaved practice produces better performance on a delayed test.
During blocked practice you improve visibly and rapidly. During interleaved practice you make more errors and progress feels slower. Learners consistently rate blocked practice as more effective — and consistently perform worse on it later. Performance during practice is a poor guide to learning.
Why it works
Two explanations are usually offered, and they may both contribute.
Discrimination. Interleaving forces you to identify which type of problem you are facing before solving it. In blocked practice, you already know — the whole block is the same type. Real situations rarely announce their category, and interleaving trains the identification step that blocked practice skips.
Retrieval effort. Switching between topics means each return requires reloading the approach from memory rather than continuing with it already active. That retrieval effort is the same mechanism underlying the testing effect.
Related difficulties
Interleaving sits alongside other findings with the same shape:
- Spacing. Distributed practice beats massed practice, covered separately.
- Retrieval practice. Testing beats re-reading.
- Varied practice. Practising a skill under varied conditions produces better transfer than practising under constant ones.
- Generation. Producing an answer before being shown it improves retention, even when the attempt is wrong.
All share the pattern: worse during practice, better afterwards.
Where interleaving applies
It works best where items are related but distinguishable, and where knowing which approach to apply is part of the skill — mathematics problem types, medical differential diagnosis, language grammar structures, sports skills with varied game situations, musical passages.
It is less useful when you are first acquiring something entirely unfamiliar. Some initial blocked practice to establish the basic form is reasonable before mixing. Interleaving from the first minute of a completely new skill can be counterproductive.
Applying it
- Mix problem types within a study session rather than completing all of one type
- Return to earlier material regularly rather than moving on permanently
- In physical practice, vary distance, angle, speed and conditions rather than repeating identical repetitions
- Accept the higher error rate as a feature
- Judge progress by delayed testing, not by how the session felt
The general lesson
The most useful takeaway is not interleaving specifically. It is that the feeling of learning is unreliable. Fluency during practice — material feeling familiar and easy — is produced by conditions that often lead to worse retention.
This is worth knowing beyond study contexts, because it explains why re-reading, highlighting and reviewing feel productive while producing less than the harder alternatives.
